Student Development
Learn how MI develops students through values-driven education.
Overview
The Student Development curriculum in MI serves to empower students through values-driven education that nurtures their strengths, sharpens executive functions, and builds lifelong habits for success.
Level Focus

Key Programmes
1) Academic target setting, skills building and mentoring
Students are guided to set academic targets each term. Through structured reflection and progress reviews, they learn to monitor their own learning, celebrate growth, and identify strategies for improvement. This process fosters self-motivation, accountability, and a growth mindset in students.
MI adopts a strengths-based approach where teachers focus on character strengths in teaching and learning. Through class discussions and guided reflection, students learn to recognise and apply their strengths in both academic and personal contexts. Essential study skills and executive functions—such as organisation, time management, goal-setting, and self-regulation are also explicitly taught. These skills empower students to become effective, independent learners who can plan strategically, manage challenges, and balance their responsibilities both inside and outside the classroom.
To further support students, MI adopts a whole-school structured mentoring approach where students have a teacher mentor. Mentors help students reflect on progress, refine goals, and develop action plans for personal and academic growth. This supportive relationship ensures that every student is valued and equipped to thrive.
2) Tiered System of Support
MI adopts the Tiered System of Support in supporting and managing students’ needs. Each cohort is looked after by a Year Head, supported by a Level Mentor. Year Heads, together with Home Tutors, work with the Student Management Team to inculcate the importance of self-management. In addition, Special Educational Needs (SEN) Officers and School Counsellors also work hand in hand with teachers to provide timely support for students with additional needs such as learning, behavioural and social-emotional needs.

Tier 1 - Support for all students through school wide programmes and activities. These include inclusive classroom practices, character and skills development programmes and cohort town halls to incorporate students’ voices. All these are part of the core Student Development Curriculum.
Tier 2 - Targeted support for some students. Targeted support might include executive functions coaching and social-communication workshops.
Tier 3 - Intensive support for few students. This support is highly individualised, addressing specific challenges with regular monitoring and review of progress.
3) Partnership with stakeholders
The Student Development Team works closely with teachers, parents and community partners to support the holistic development of every Millennian. Through coordinated planning, regular communication, and timely intervention, the team ensures that each student’s academic, social, and emotional needs are met. By fostering strong partnerships and shared responsibility, a supportive network that enables every student to learn, grow, and thrive is built.
